Spurs are reportedly eyeing a move for Benfica manager Roger Schmidt should Antonio Conte decide not to extend his contract.
Conte joined the Premier League side a year ago, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
After a difficult start to life in north London, the Italian guided Spurs to a top-four finish ahead of arch-rivals Arsenal.
The January transfer window had a huge helping hand in guiding the north Londoners to fourth.
Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur both joined from Juventus and were key in their end-of-season form.
The one-time Premier League-winning head coach has said some pretty strange things during his time with Spurs.
After months of constant moaning, he told Mikel Arteta to stop doing just that after his side beat Arsenal last season.
Conte has since proceeded to become the biggest moaner in the country.
There is an air of inevitability that he will fully lose the plot and decide he wants to leave Spurs at some point this season.
This has made Daniel Levy and co. pretty anxious with his contract expiring at the end of 2022-23.
Spurs are unsurprisingly hoping to tie him down to a new deal, meanwhile, Conte is not too sure what he wants to do.
He has been frequently linked with a move back to Juventus, who are struggling with Max Allegri at the helm.
Despite Conte’s moaning and two losses from Spurs’ last three league games, they are enjoying their best-ever start to a Premier League season and topped their Champions League group.
Another side who finished top of their Champions League group is Benfica, who are being led by Roger Schmidt.
Benfica defied the odds to finish ahead of Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain in Group H.
With the same goal difference, head-to-head record, wins, draws and losses as PSG, the Portuguese side went through on virtue of away goals scored. They had nine. PSG had six.
Why is this relevant? Well, you know why. Because Benfica boss Schmidt is Spurs’ ‘Plan B’ should Conte leave at the end of the season, according to Rudy Galetti.
Spurs are planning to sit down with Conte during the World Cup to discuss a new contract.
The Premier League club will be hoping for some clarity by the time the domestic season resumes on Boxing Day.
With Conte’s situation uncertain, Spurs are apparently thinking of potential successors.
They see Schmidt as the ‘ideal profile’ to come in should Conte opt against a contract renewal, Galetti states.
Benfica’s 6-1 win against Maccabi Haifa on Wednesday secured them top spot ahead of PSG.
They won four and drew two of their six games as Juventus dropped to the Europa League.
The Eagles are also unbeaten in the Portuguese league, with ten wins from their opening 11 games.
