Sir Alex Ferguson has waxed lyrical about Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag in a rare interview with Sky Sports.
Ferguson was in attendance – as he usually is for any United match – as Ten Hag’s men won the Carabao Cup on Sunday.
The Red Devils beat Newcastle 2-0 at Wembley thanks to goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford.
Casemiro has been absolutely fantastic this term after joining from Real Madrid for a fee in the region of £60million last summer.
United have been pretty horrendous in the transfer market since Ferguson retired, but their business last summer has been massively influential in their success on the pitch this term.
The Scot has praised Ten Hag for the signings he made in his first window at the club and has given a glowing review of the Dutch manager’s work at Old Trafford.
“United are based on success and he’s going the right way about it,” Sir Alex told Sky Sports. “His signings have been really good, I think that was important.
“And he’s got a grip of the club which is really, really big for him. When you come to United, you try and get off to a good start right away and he’s doing well, he really is.”
Ferguson added: “You come to United, you try to get off to a good start right away and he’s done it well, he really has.
“And I think for Erik he’s got Steve McClaren. And Steve was here with us for a few years, so that experience helps. And I think Steve played a big part.”
The United legend also praised in-form forward Rashford, whose deflected goal on Sunday was the 14th time he has found the back of the net in 16 matches this year.
“I don’t think he’s a striker, he operates really from the left-hand side,” Ferguson added.
“But fantastic. His finishing is always good. He always keeps his shots down, which is really important for a striker.
“He’s in a great vein of form and unfortunately for us he’s the main source of goals. We could do with an extra one, you know. But he’s doing it for us.”
Ten Hag wrote a letter to the United supporters after Sunday’s win over Newcastle ended the club’s six-year wait for a trophy.
The Dutch manager wrote: “When I arrived at the club, we spoke about the challenge and importance of reuniting this group of players with our amazing fans.
“Believe me, this squad knows exactly how important you are. The bond between the supporters and the team is there for everyone to see and what we experienced together yesterday will only further strengthen that bond.
“The atmosphere generated by those of you at Wembley was incredible.
“I am proud of my players and staff for their preparation and performances.
“Yesterday, we saw the required desire, spirit and determination that we must demand of everyone who represents Manchester United We set ourselves high standards every day. At Wembley we met those demands and got the reward of our first trophy together.
“We know the importance of silverware throughout the history of this great club.
“We are so happy to bring the trophy back to Old Trafford but we are by no means satisfied and we will not stop here.
“Together we have experienced the feeling of what it means to win together for Manchester United. It is truly magnificent and will only make each of us hungrier for more success.”
