Romano ‘expects’ Man Utd to sign striker after Cristiano Ronaldo outburst

Manchester United will actively pursue a new striker in January with Cristiano Ronaldo set to leave the club, says Fabrizio Romano.

Ronaldo tried to leave in the summer transfer window but no side were willing to sign him.

Ahead of the winter transfer window, the 37-year-old Portuguese striker has slammed the club and Erik ten Hag in an astonishing interview with Piers Morgan.

After saying he has no “respect” for the United manager and criticising the lack of development and improvement at the club over the years, there is no way back for Ronaldo – who is destined to leave in January.

Transfer journalist Romano has had his say on the situation and believes the Red Devils have no choice but to recruit a new striker in January.

“I think they can’t survive with just Anthony Martial,” Romano told The United Stand on YouTube. “I think they know they have to find a striker, also because Erik ten Hag was really clear in the summer from what I’m told.

“His message has always been, if we find a solution for Cristiano, we need a new striker.

“They are in the Europa League, of course, Premier League, it is really hard this season.

“It is really important for them to have a new striker.

“I expect Manchester United to go for a striker because the original plan with Ralf Rangnick was to go for a striker last January and then in the summer and now we are again in the January market and they need to find a striker.

“They were waiting to understand if they can find a big opportunity, an important player who can be Manchester United No. 9 for the future, or a short-term opportunity and then a big striker in the summer.

“I saw some links to [Eric-Maxim] Choupo-Moting, but Bayern [Munich] have absolutely no intention to let him go in January.

“I’m told Napoli have no intention to sell any player in January.”

Romano revealed that Ten Hag wanted a striker in the mold of Liverpool summer signing Darwin Nunez but the club ended up not signing a new No. 9 during the Dutch manager’s first transfer window.

Untied have been heavily linked with Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, with Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix, PSV’s Cody Gakpo and Lille’s Jonathan David also believed to be targets.

“Erik ten Hag in the summer wanted a player like Darwin Nunez,” he added.

“[Victor] Osimhen is this kind of striker, but he is not easy in January.

“Jonathan David is a No. 9 and he could be available in January I’m told. Of course his price could be a big one, let’s see what happens with Canada at the World Cup.

“I’m told he could be around £45-50million.

“Joao Felix is not an easy one… they want big money.

“It’s going to be not so fast because Manchester United have to deal with this Cristiano Ronaldo issue.”

Asked if he expects United to be busy in January, Romano responded. “I think busy on the striker situation. I see them going for a striker.

“They were not intending to sign any striker in January. They wanted to continue with the current swaud and then to invest in the summer.

“But then after this Cristiano Ronaldo story I think they will be busy.”

On United’s reported interest in Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic, Romano said: “He is not going to be easy.

“He is at the World Cup with Serbia and then we will see, but at the moment it is not something discussed between Juventus or any club.”
