Manchester City have reportedly ramped up their interest in Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies, as they consider making a bid for him this summer.
The Canada international, who is one of the fastest players in Europe, will face City in the Champions League quarter-final second leg on Wednesday as Bayern aim to overturn a three-goal deficit at the Allianz Stadium.
It’s no secret that Pep Guardiola is looking to sign a new left-back this summer, so it will be interesting to see the Cityzens make a concrete offer for Davies in the coming months.
Man City are currently on course for a historic treble, as they continue to apply pressure on Premier League leaders Arsenal, and remain firm favourites to win both the Champions League and the FA Cup.
However, one of the positions that Guardiola remains keen to bolster is left-back, after trying and failing to sign Marc Cucurella last summer.
This term, the Spanish manager has generally employed a three-at-the-back formation, with Nathan Ake being utilised as a left-sided centre-back.
City also have Sergio Gomez at their disposal, but he has struggled for consistent playing time even since Joao Cancelo’s shock loan move to Bayern in January.
With that in mind, there is a clear need for the Manchester club to bring in a new, natural left-back, and Davies certainly has the potential to be an excellent addition.
According to reputed German journalist Florian Plettenberg, City are ready to test Bayern’s resolve and rival Real Madrid for the Canadian’s signature this summer.
Since joining Bayern in 2019, Davies has made 151 appearances across all competitions, scoring eight goals and making 25 assists in the process.
In that time, the defender has also helped the German giants to lift four Bundesliga titles, one Champions League and two DFB-Pokals, so he clearly has the experience required to perform at the highest level.
Davies also has plenty of admiration for one Man City player – Erling Haaland – who he came up against many times during the striker’s time at Borussia Dortmund.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Davies said: “[Haaland is a] top striker.
“He’s on his way to becoming a legend in the game, can’t take anything away from him. He’s fast, he’s strong, he’s intelligent. Overall, he’s just a good player.
“I played against him in the Bundesliga and now playing here, can’t take anything away from him.”
Davies’ focus at the moment will no doubt be on playing against Haaland on Wednesday, but if he wants to play alongside him one day, Man City will have to put their money where their mouth is.
Indeed, signing Davies wouldn’t come cheap, with Transfermarkt valuing him at approximately £70m. But, it would be great to see his lightning pace on display in the Premier League.
