Liverpool blow as report reveals Diogo Jota will ‘miss World Cup’ despite MRI wait

Liverpool star Diogo Jota will reportedly ‘miss the World Cup’ having picked up an injury against Manchester City.

The former Wolves star was stretchered off in stoppage time at Anfield having helped his side to a 1-0 win.

And Portuguese outlet A Bola now claim the forward is set to be out for over a month, ending his chances of being selected by his national boss Fernando Santos for the World Cup in Qatar.

The report states: ‘The 25-year-old Portuguese international performed an MRI and, although the results have not yet been released, A BOLA knows that the stop time will be more than one month, completely ruling out the possibility of Diogo Jota being called to represent Portugal in the World Championship. ‘

It’s also bad news for Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who will already be without Luis Diaz until the new year.

Jota’s injury soured an otherwise excellent afternoon for Klopp and Liverpool, who had struggled in the Premier League up until the win over City.

Klopp has been criticised by Manchester City for ‘borderline xenophobia’ ahead of the game and by pundits for the touchline behaviour which saw him shown a red card.

The Reds boss was gesticulating wildly and shouting on the touchline after referee Anthony Taylor failed to award Liverpool a free-kick for what looked like a clear foul on Mohamed Salah.

But the German manager admitted after the game that it was “not OK” for him to lose his cool.

“The red card was my fault. I went over the top in the moment but I don’t think I was disrespectful to anyone,” Klopp said.

“When you look at the pictures back I know myself at 55 years old the way I look in these moments is already worth a red card.

“I lost it in that moment and that is not OK but a little bit of an excuse. I would like to mention how can you not whistle that foul? How on earth is that possible?”
