Ferguson claims Toffees turned down chance to buy Haaland for ‘a couple of million’

Duncan Ferguson has claimed that Everton turned down the chance to buy Erling Haaland for just “a couple of million quid” when he was a teenager.

It really comes as no surprise to hear that the Toffees missed the boat on Haaland.

But it will be even more annoying to them given how they have basically thrown money down the toilet on players in recent years.

Haaland was born in Leeds but he progressed through the ranks with Norwegian side Byrne.

Ferguson has revealed that Everton could have got themselves a bargain had they signed Halaand all of them years ago.

“I mean my God, what a phenomenal player Erling Haaland is,” Ferguson said on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.

“He’s going to be incredible, isn’t he? But believe it or not, he was in at Everton. His Dad had brought him in at Everton and they never signed him!

“He was brought in at about 15 or 16 years of age and the team he was with at the time [Bryne] wanted a couple of million quid for him and Everton wouldn’t buy him. Everton didn’t think it was the right move for them at the time…”

Sam Allardyce went onto claim that Haaland would have saved Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his job had he joined Man Utd in 2020.

“Ole worked with Haaland at Molde, so he rang him up, met him and tried to get him to come to Manchester United when he was manager there,” Allardyce added.

“But it didn’t happen and then Haaland went to Germany to join Borussia Dortmund [from Red Bull Salzburg].

“I don’t know whether that was financial, or whatever it might be, but I think that, personally, if Ole had got him to join Manchester United then he would still be the manager there today.”

Haaland instead opted to grow his reputation at Borussia Dortmund. He scored 86 goals in just 89 games for the Bundesliga outfit.

The forward finally moved to the Premier League this summer as Man City brought him in for an initial fee believed to be around £51m.

The 21-year-old has taken no time to adapt to life in England as he has netted 22 goals in just 16 games across all competitions.

Former Molde chief scout – John Vik – recently revealed that Arsenal and Liverpool “could have got” Haaland while he was playing in Norway.

“Liverpool could have got him. Arsenal could have got him. Everyone was there to watch him but these clubs were seeing a No 9 who was tall and broad and, ‘Oh, he’s going to be a target man’.

“I couldn’t for the life of me see why they had narrowed him down that way.”
