Carragher makes major Man Utd claim relating to ‘superior’ City after ‘worrying’ result against Arsenal

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher thinks this current Manchester City team ‘is superior to the Manchester United team that won the Treble in 1999’.

City are the firm favourites for the Premier League title following their 4-1 victory at the Etihad against Arsenal on Thursday night. A brace from Kevin De Bruyne and a brilliant performance from Erling Haaland helped to seal all three points for Pep Guardiola’s men.

Man City are now firmly on course for the treble. They will face Man Utd in the final of the FA Cup and they come up against La Liga giants Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.

The Premier League club were beaten in the semi-finals of the Champions League by Real Madrid last season. This came after their 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the 2021 final.

Carragher thinks Man City are ‘arguably the greatest English team ever’ but they ‘must win the Champions League if they want immortality’.

The Sky Sports pundit has also explained why this City team is ‘superior’ to Man Utd’s 1999 side.

‘This City side is superior to the Manchester United team that won the Treble in 1999,’ Carragher wrote for The Telegraph.

‘There is barely any similarity in how they are going about trying to match that achievement. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side managed to do it with sheer will, some improbable late comebacks and – they would be the first to admit – fortunate bounces of the ball at key moments.

‘A few weeks ago I asked why so few were referencing City’s Treble prospect. Now they are closing in on the milestone at a canter.

‘Since the international break, no-one has been able to land a jab on them, let alone a meaningful punch. Guardiola will insist there is still a long way to go to win all three trophies.

‘Perhaps luck will have to intervene at some point. But what is so extraordinary about their current level is how it would now be more surprising and illogical for them to miss out on the Treble.’

Carragher has also pointed out why City’s 4-1 win over Arsenal is ‘both astonishing and worrying’.

‘The gulf between City and Arsenal was both astonishing and worrying for the rest of the Premier League. I cannot recall a game of such stature – a title head-to-head at the climax of a season – that was so one-sided,’ Carragher added.

‘Yet I cannot help but feel some sympathy for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal’s players.

‘In the pre-Guardiola era, Arsenal’s points tally would still have them on course for the Premier League. Just like Klopp’s Liverpool in those years they finished second, Arsenal have proven to be a good team at the wrong time.’
