Two second half goals ensured Chelsea ended the weekend level on points with Arsenal and Manchester United in the WSL, with a 2-0 win at Brighton.
On a very wet night on the south coast, Brighton did well to stifle a heavily rotated Chelsea side who couldn’t force their way in front throughout the first half.
But the Blues were patient and finally took the lead just shy of the hour mark when Beth England was alert to follow in the rebound as Niamh Charles’ headed against the crossbar from a corner.
“Sorry Niamh” were England’s words to Sky Sports, with most players – including the scorer – of the belief that Charles’ initial effort had actually crossed the line.
The cavalry came in soon after for Chelsea who kept plugging away to put the game to bed, but not without a fight. Hope Powell’s side dug in deep, but when Katie Robinson spurned a chance to equalise with 15 minutes to play, Chelsea kicked on and put the game to bed.
Pernille Harder broke into the box following a slick passing exchange after 86 minutes, taking the ball forward before rifling a powerful shot into the roof of the net, securing a win that puts her side level on points with Arsenal and Manchester United, albeit having played a game more.
It’s a vital win on the road for Chelsea, who kept pace with the WSL front runners despite playing through incredibly difficult weather conditions.
Brighton, meanwhile, sit 10th and fail to capitalise on Liverpool losing earlier in the day. Their search for a second win of the season goes on.
